Windrush Recovery Project

The Windrush Recovery Project was an innovative two-year programme of community-led river enhancement, incorporating actions to address diffuse and point source water quality issues, investigate and rectify drainage connectivity and monitor activities in and surrounding the rivers in the Windrush catchment.

Project officers worked closely with stakeholders to identify opportunities for delivering river enhancement and community engagement across the Windrush catchment.

Project officers undertook a series of rivers walks across the catchment, communicating with landowners and other partners, presenting reports and making recommendations. Working closely with the Windrush Catchment Partnership the project officers put in place an engagement plan to grow community action.

Investigating diffuse pollution the project officers focused on road run off in the Upper Windrush catchment, the subsequent report (see below) provided a series of recommendations to be taken forward.

Road run off in the upper Windrush catchment

Road run off is known to cause a multitude of issues in the Upper Windrush including providing a conduit for pollutants and sediments to reach our watercourses. Research into the scale and frequency of the issue especially in rural catchment is low. The Windrush Recovery Project set out to showcase the scale of the issue and set about making recommendations to tackle the growing issue.

The report is a combination of the Windrush Recovery Projects and puts forward a series of recommendations that will now be pushed forward.
